FAQs

See what everyone's asking!

There are four main factors to consider when purchasing timber flooring. The grade, colour, width and finish. The grade reflects how many veins and knots the wood has. The higher the grade, the less imperfections there are. The colour is simply your own choice but should be matched with your existing interior design. In our collection, the width ranges from 10mm to 20mm thick choices of 190mm, 220mm, 240mm, 260mm, 300mm and 330mm wide. All of our products are finished with a UV lacquer however any order can be placed with custom size, colour and coating based on your preference.

The most common types of timber used for flooring are solid hardwood timber flooring or engineered timber flooring. At Timba Flooring, we offer a range of Engineered Oak Flooring, including European Oak Flooring and French Oak Flooring, in Bayside Melbourne and surrounds. Solid timber floors are made from whole wood pieces, whereas engineered timber floors use an upper layer of hardwood that is bonded to plywood. All of our timber flooring is sustainably sourced and produced under ISO9000 & ISO14000 certificates. The type of flooring you choose will depend on your budget and lifestyle requirements as well as your personal styling preferences.

Ensuring that you carry out adequate care and maintenance, you can expect engineered timber floors to last for over 10 years with no degradation. Most people will either re-sand or re-coat their timber flooring every 10-15 years to ensure that they stay in good condition. Timber flooring in Melbourne can last for a considerable amount of time thanks to our dry climate. It can even withstand up to 20 years of use before requiring a re-sand or re-coat in some cases.

Engineered timber flooring offers several advantages as opposed to traditional timber flooring. One of the main benefits of timber flooring is that it provides you with the natural beauty and feel of real hardwood, at a more affordable price point. Engineered timber flooring is much more cost-effective when compared to solid hardwood flooring. In addition to this, its layered construction makes it much more resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations, reducing the chances of experiencing warping and buckling. Another important benefit on engineered timber flooring is that you can repair or replace individual boards or boards rather than sanding and re-coating your entire floor (as you would with a solid timber floor). Engineered timber flooring is generally more cost-effective compared to solid hardwood flooring.

Whether or not you can refinish an engineered timber floor depends on the thickness of the hardwood veneer. All of our veneers supplied at Timba Flooring have the ability to be sanded at least once, with some up to 3 times depending on the circumstances. Please consult a Timba flooring specialist to learn more about refinishing.

Engineered timber flooring and laminate flooring are both popular choices for many homeowners, however they vary in their appearance and composition. Engineered timber flooring consists of a real wooden veneer bonded to a core layer, which offers a more natural, authentic appearance. Laminate flooring on the other hand is made of a high-density fibreboard (HDF) core, with an artificial printed image of wood grain on the top. Engineered timber flooring tends to be more durable and can be refinished to restore its quality, whilst laminate flooring is more affordable and easier to install.

Whilst engineered timber flooring is more resistant to moisture in comparison to solid hardwood flooring, we would not recommend that you install it in areas of the home that are prone to excessive moisture, such as bathrooms or saunas. Although the construction and composition of engineered timber flooring enables it to resist moisture, prolonged exposure can still cause damage to its structure over time. For these high-moisture environments, we would advise that you choose flooring options specifically designed for such areas, including ceramic tiles or vinyl flooring.

Regular maintenance and cleaning are incredibly important in order to keep your engineered timber flooring in good condition. Avoid using excessive water when cleaning, as moisture can seep into the joints over time, causing irreparable damage. Instead, use a damp mop or a manufacturer recommended wood floor cleaning product. At Timba Flooring, we can help you to choose a product that is right for you. Clean up spills promptly and place doormats at entrances to prevent dirt and grit from scratching the surface. You could also consider using protective pads on your furniture legs, and avoid high heels or any other sharp objects that could possibly dent or scratch the flooring.

In most cases, you can install engineered timber flooring over your existing flooring. It can be installed over concrete, plywood, and even some types of tile and vinyl flooring. If you are going to install engineered timber flooring over the top of your current flooring, it’s important that you ensure your subfloor is clean, level, and moisture-free. Consult the team at Timba Flooring for specific recommendations and requirements regarding subfloor preparation and compatibility.

The lifespan of engineered timber flooring depends on a multitude of factors, including the thickness of the hardwood veneer, the type and quality of the product, and how well it is kept and maintained. Regular care and maintenance will increase the lifespan of your floor even further, and on average engineered timber flooring can last anywhere from 20 to 30 years or more. Thicker veneers can generally be refinished multiple times, extending the floor’s lifespan even further.
